ZWO AM5N Harmonic Equatorial Mount – new model for 2024

The 2024 model of the popular ZWO harmonic equatorial mount features:

  • improved payload capacity  (up to 15 kg without counterweights and 20kg with counterweights)
  • better tracking performance (periodic error reduced to >± 10 arcseconds)
  • power distribution and a USB hub on the mount’s saddle.

Traditional equatorial mounts often require heavy counterweights, making them cumbersome and difficult to balance in RA and Dec axes. They are also inconvenient for transit, storage and assembling. Some newer harmonic mounts may lack multifunctionality, have insufficient load capacity, and suffer from stability issues and cable tangling.

To address these issues, the new AM5 harmonic mount (2024 edition) eliminates the need for counterweights, offers high load capacity (15kg without counterweights, 20kg with a 5kg counterweight), and balances portability with stability. The ZWO’s customised strain wave geared reducer ensures precision with an accuracy within ±10″. It can be used as both an equatorial and alt-azimuth mount, with an altitude adjustment range of 0-90 degrees.

  • Strong load capacity. Without counterweight: 15kg. With counterweight: 20kg.
  • Lightweight design. No counterweight required.
  • Precision control. Strain wave gear reducer + synchronous belt.
  • Multi-function. Equatorial mount – alt-azimuth mount

The internal structure is optimised with a strain wave geared reducer and synchronous belt, achieving precise control with a 300:1 reduction ratio.

Astronomy-Dedicated Strain Wave Gear

Developed in collaboration with well-known strain wave gear manufacturers, this motor is tailored for astrophotography, offering ultra-low periodic error, stable transmission, and high torque output. Each mount is tested to ensure a periodic error within ±10 arcseconds, guaranteeing its performance.
