The New Lunt 80 mm Universal Telescope is a powerhouse modular telescope, taking one of Lunt Solar Systems most popular sized telescopes and making it even more functional! At 80mm Aperture, with a FPL53 Doublet Lens, the 80 mm Universal Telescope is a precision aligned ED refractor that is made to impress whether you are chasing the Sun’s active regions or sifting through the stars of the milky way.
In Hydrogen Alpha configuration single stack mode, the 80 mm Universal Telescope provides excellent viewing prowess at <.65 Å bandpass with Lunt’s renowned Doppler True Tuning (pressure tuned) system. But don’t sleep on its capabilities simply because the Sun goes down!
And after sunset, let the stars and planets shine! Conversion from hydrogen alpha mode has never been easier: Remove the hydrogen alpha module (and attached pressure tuner) from your telescope optical tube assembly (OTA), and replace with the focuser of your choice.

Blocking filter Options
The Lunt 80 mm Universal Telescope is supplied with the customers choice of blocking filter (a component between the focuser and the eyepiece that is used in solar viewing).
The size of the blocking filter determines the size of the field you can see, and for large camera sensors, a small blocking filter may result in vignetting, meaning the corners of the sensor will not receive the required quantity of light.
- 12mm in a 2″ diagonal or straight-through tube configuration
- 18mm in a 2″ diagonal or straight-through tube configuration
Focuser Options
The Lunt 80MT Modular telescope is currently supplied wth a 2″ Rack and Pinion focuser.
Feather Touch focusers are also available but due to the long lead times these are shipped separately. Contact Sidereal Trading if you require a Feature Touch focuser.
Optional Extras (sold separately)
Double Stack filter module
The Double Stack module narrows the bandpass for solar viewing from <0.65 Angstroms to <0.45 Angstroms. This enables you to see significantly sharper details on the sun and in the corona.
White light solar wedge
The white light (or Herschel) wedge is an optical method of passing all frequencies of light but attenuating (dimming) them, so the sun’s image is safe to view (with a Hydrogen Alpha filter). Most of the light is not sent towards the observer, but downwards to the bottom of the diagonal. This can make the diagonal hot to the touch.
Polarising filter for white light
A Polarising Filter will help control the brightness of the Sun’s image when using a Lunt White Light Wedge visually.
Calcium K wedge
A Calcium K wedge enables the viewer to observe the sun through an entirely different wavelength of light – near ultraviolet. This is especially suited to a camera as the human eye is not very sensitive to this frequency.
